Problems Affecting Autonomous Underwater Vehicles
Although there are certain merits to employing AUVs, they are hit by a list of problems hindering them from being used extensively.
1. Navigation and Communication
Submarine navigation and communication will never be that simple. GPS can never be used underwater, and therefore AUVs would have to depend on the acoustic system, which would be less accurate. Submarine communication would be less and slower compared to aerial.
2. Limited Power
AUVs operate on batteries, and batteries have a shelf life. This reduces the lifespan they can be employed for a mission, and they need to be recovered or recharged periodically.
3. Expensive
AUVs are expensive to produce and operate. Material and technology employed in manufacture to withstand sea pressure render it expensive, thus beyond other organisations’ affordability.
4. Environmental Impact
Whereas AUVs are as limited as they have no long-term environmental harm effects, there will certainly be some effect on injuring aquatic life or ravaging delicate ecosystems. Wisdom and prudence are the best inhibitors of that.
Future of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles
